Design & Build

Nigel Hughes has been involved in numerous Design & Build (D&B) contracts and on both sides of the contract. Early on in Nigel’s career as a consulting engineer he successfully won a Design & Build Tender with Kendal Construction with an alternative design to the conforming design being tendered. A cast insitu post-tensioned design was offered in lieu of the confirming precast beam design for a multi-span road bridge over railway lines in Hamilton.

 

Nigel’s next involvement in specific D&B contracts was when he worked as a senior project manager for Carson Group. As a project manager Nigel managed many D&B contracts as follows:-

  • 50 apartment multistory block, Longview Apartments, where the D&B contract was developed with Simpson Grierson solicitors. See Figure 2.
  • three industrial projects for Auckland International Airport – Fliway Group, Ansett Freight and Wilson Logistics See Figures 3-5.
  • Multi-storey Carpark Building for Auckland Healthcare at the Grafton Hospital. See Figure 6.

Longview Apartments

Client: Greg Clarke

Contractor: Lawton Construction

The D&B special conditions for the contract were developed with Rabin Rabindran from Simpson Grierson. Lawton Construction were successful in tendering and the D&B contract was agreed.

As part of the contract Lawton Construction had to novate the concept design completed by ASC Architects.

 

Fliway Group – 1994/95

Client – AIAL

D&B Contractor – Mainzeal

The facility included a two storey office building and warehouse with freight finger with loading docks. The contract was a Design & Build contract won by Mainzeal Construction. In addition to the base build project management for the AIAL the fitout of the offices was also project managed direct for Fliway. Mainzeal engaged Ignite Architects.

In 1999 the warehouse was extended to the maximum area allowable on the site. This expansion was also  completed as a D&B contract but was won by Hawkins Construction. The expansion included the construction of three office centres within the warehouse expansion. Hawkins engaged Ignite architects.

Ansett Freight – 1995/96

Client – AIAL

D&B Contractor – MacRennie

The facility included ground floor office and warehouse and canopy and another canopy linking building to the adjacent building. MacRennie Construction engaged Avery Architects. This facility is now leased by NZ Post following Ansett Freight’s exit from the market place.

Wilson Logistics – 2003/04

Client – AIAL

D&B Contractor – Ebert Construction

This facility included single level office building of 800sqm with a 3500m2 warehouse adjacent and a separate Dangerous Goods Building with large canopy area for freight handling. Ebert Construction engaged Stephenson & Turner architects.

Auckland Hospital Carpark – 1998/99

Client – Auckland Healthcare

D&B Contractor – Mainzeal

This carpark building was delivered by tendering a D&B package which was won by Mainzeal Construction.

Mainzeal had to novate the concept design of Max Grant Architects but engaged their own engineering consultants.

Head Office (2000sqm) and Warehouse (15,000sqm)

Client Representative for Spicers Paper managing their brief to developer, Goodman Group,  and managing the design and build of their fitout.

Air New Zealand Maint. Dock – 2004/2005

Client – Strarch

D&B Contractor – Strarch Australia

Acted as representative and local project manager for Strarch, the D&B contractor based in Australia. Involved in the delivery of the contract during the construction phase and liaising with the client Air New Zealand.

BJ Ball Group – 2008/2009

D&B Developer – Southpark Corp

Head Office (2000sqm) and Warehouse (12,000sqm)

Client Representative for BJ Ball Group managing their brief to the developer, Southpark Corporation, and managing the design and build of their fitout including machinery installation and office fitout.
